Tip #1 Alter your perspective.

If you are thinking like this, stop! All of us have been recommending and promoting for years and years. If we choose to stop, we will just stop our paycheck.

One of the secrets to mlm success is realizing this is a mentoring and coaching business; a relationship business. Anybody can do this if they truly want to. We just teach them how to pick up the paycheck. What every new recruit needs is to be taught the skill necessary to succeed.

Tip #2: Learn to generate your own leads.

Many people in mlm buy leads. This is not the best way to build your business. You see, many leads lists are sold to a number of different companies, so your “hot” prospect might already have had numerous other calls from folks trying to get them in “on the deal”.

When it comes to how to recruit in mlm, another important point is that isn’t a duplicatable system. Believe it or not, some people out there are paying $100 per lead and spend $1500 a month on leads. Plus, they spend around $2,000 on their company’s product. Now, think for a minute. How duplicatable is this for most people? $100 a lead and $2,000 a month on products? Can you see when it comes how to recruit people in MLM and how to build MLM, this is a bad strategy?

The bottom line is first, you do not need to buy leads especially when it is much easier to generate your own. Second, it is crucial you have a duplicatable system so it is not difficult for you and your downline to recruit people for your mlm business.

Tip #3: Take a careful look at how big the company’s building is.

This sounds weird, but it is something that should be carefully considered.

Have you ever taken the time to think about how much upkeep a huge building requires? Not only this, but also how much staff it takes to keep the operation going?

You see, when a company has a huge building with a lot of staff, the company has to pay for the lights, keep the lawn mowed, pay for electricity, maintenance people, etc., that can add up very quickly!Plus, with all that staff comes salaries, bonuses, vacation time, health benefits, short-term disability, and the like. The bottom line, it all adds up, for some, to millions a month in overhead.

You may ask who is paying for all of this? In many cases the money has to be taken from the compensation plan. Also, products prices can be high to help cover costs. Whatever the case, this is a bad scenario.

You want to always make sure you bring your people into a strong company where they will be paid well for their efforts and where products are sold to consumers at the best price. This will help them build a successful business.

These ten negative traits are the reason you or your team may be struggling to find MLM success.

Usually, I accentuate the positive, however I think it’s important to understand the ‘demons’ that are nipping at our heels.  And I’ve noticed that the harder we work for our goals, the more negative influence we have to deal with.

As a professional network marketer, you want to be successful in building your home business. If you find yourself struggling in spite of being in a company that has all the supports in place for you to be successful, there likely is an underlying subconscious factor that is holding you back.

If you are familiar with Napoleon Hill’s classic, “Think and Grow Rich“, in the chapter entitled ‘Organized Planning’, he discusses thirty-one major reasons for failing.

Hill’s checklist is a quite useful one to study. You can easily discover if any of the thirty-one reasons discussed applies to you. If you really want to be successful not only in business, but in other areas of your life, try to figure out what is standing between you and achieving your dreams. Here are the top reasons for failing not only in MLM but life:

Reason #1: Lack of a well-defined purpose in life. If you have no definite goals, not only for your network marketing business, but life in general, you will not be successful. Hill reports that 98 out of every 100 people he talked to had no well-defined purpose. Don’t be one of the 98 who are wandering aimlessly in life. Spend some quiet time brainstorming what you want out of life and your business, write down your goals and aspirations, and then read them out loud every day to keep them fresh in your mind.

Reason #2: Lack of ambition to aim above mediocrity. If you are the type of person who is totally indifferent to your lot in life, have no desire to get ahead, and are not willing to work for it, you will not succeed at anything.

Reason #3: Lack of self-discipline. A lack of self-control can wreak havoc in your life. You must learn to control all negative qualities, including the ones that are in you. This, of course, isn’t always easy to do. If you don’t have self-control and discipline, your self will conquer you!

Reason #4: Procrastination. This is one of the most common causes of failure. Every human being on the planet faces this demon, which can spoil your chance of success. Many of us float through life waiting for just the right opportunity to come. You must learn to take action. Why? This is important because many times things won’t be “just right”. The key is take action with whatever tools and resources you have. If you do this, you will be amazed at what a difference this can make in your home business and life.

Reason #5: Lack of persistence. Many people become professional quitters. Most of us are very good at starting, but the “quitter” category usually claims the majority. Plus, many people give up at their first defeat. You must learn to be persistent no matter what obstacles you are facing. If you are persistent, you will find that “failure” will not able to keep up!

Reason #6: Negative personality. To put it bluntly, if people avoid you because you are the king or queen of negativity, there is no hope for success. Success comes by applying power and this is obtained through cooperation of others. Negativity does not glue people together, but tears them apart.

Reason #7: Desire for “something for nothing.” Any type of “get rich quick” attitude, an unwillingness to actually work at your network marketing business, or wanting others to do all the work for you will doom you to failure.

Reason #8: Lack of concentration of efforts. If you are one who jumps from opportunity to opportunity because things seem to be going too slow, or to generate as many streams of income as possible, things will not be good for you. If you constantly chase the next “get you rich quick” opportunity, you are in grave trouble. Everyone will view you as a highly unfocused person who clearly has no idea what you want. Learn to concentrate all your efforts on one definitive aim.

Reason #9: Lack of enthusiasm. People will view you as someone who is not convincing if you seem ho-hum about your opportunity. If you are not excited about what you are doing, why should others be? Remember, enthusiasm is contagious and people will want to be around you if you have this spirit.

Reason #10: Egotism and vanity. If you are one who likes to control, don’t want to listen to what others have to say, have an attitude of “my way or the highway”, etc., people will see this as a red light and will keep away. These attitudes are fatal to success in your network marketing business, as well as other areas in life.

So, there you have it. The top ten reasons that could be influencing why you are having difficulty finding success not only in your MLM home business, but also in other areas of life. Work on eliminating these fatal attitudes from your life and you will be well on your road to achieving your hopes and dreams.

As a network marketing distributor, it is always important to keep abreast of the current best practices to ensure on-going business and growth. Here are the 5 best practices that many top mlm leaders are using to successfully build their businesses.

*Always have a advertising budget whether you are marketing online, offline, or doing a combination of both. Advertising is essential to your business life and growth. Stick to your budget for a year so that you will have on-going momentum. At the end of the year, evaluate how you have done and make adjustments as needed.

*Keep in contact with your team. You can touch base with them on a regular basis by phone or by email. You want to hear from your business builders, “I’ll do whatever it takes”, and not “Well, I’ll just try and give it a shot.” The second response usually means if things don’t work out for the person, they very well may quit. Leaders also make sure their distributors order products. They never complain to their upline or downline, and have their own aspirations, goals, and dreams. True leaders can also keep things humming while you are on vacation. You want to attract and build leaders with strengths like these for your team.

*Have a written plan. As a professional network marketing distributor, always write out your plan and how you will achieve your goals. Do this on a daily or weekly basis, work it, and then review it at the end of the week. If you are not satisfied with how things turned out, make adjustments for the following week.

*Discover the marketing practice that works best for you and become really good at it. This may be article writing, blogging, classified ads, creating on-line videos, e-zine advertising, etc. If you are not sure what you want to do, implement one method that is working for others until you find what works best for you.  I just heard an interview with the cellest and conductor, Yo Yo Ma.  He wanted to play double bass, settled for violin, failed at piano, and was frustrated as a musician until he discovered the cello.   You have to find your instrument if you want to make music.

I try to keep from ‘going dark’, however I’m not sure how you found this site or what stage you are at in your MLM journey.  So here is a quick list of must-dos to make sure you are picking a reputable company to get involved with.

It’s no secret that when multi level marketing (MLM) is mentioned, many people think of illegal pyramid schemes and other scams. Follow these tips to check out an MLM company and you will be able to avoid MLM scams. 

I know, there are more than seven things listed, but ‘7′ looked better in the headline.  And frankly, most people won’t do all 11 steps before making their decision. 

1. Contact the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org), the State Attorney General’s office and the Federal Trade commission (www.ftc.gov or 1-877-FTC-HELP) and at no charge you will be able to check the records of the MLM companies and will get some great tips about how to safely evaluate them.

2. Check Google and other search engines for “company name + scam” and you will find out quickly if there are complaints.

3. Check out home business message boards and scam.com for bad reviews. Obviously, there are always a couple of people that didn’t make money and want to blame the company. Do proper research and you will quickly know which distributor had a legitimate complaint and who was just plain lazy.

4. Go to Rod Cook’s www.mlmwatchdog.com and see if any problems are posted there.

5. Ask your attorney to review any documents before you sign them.

6. Present the entire program to a trusted business person and see what he or she thinks. Take their advice under consideration. You never know, if the company does turn out to be legit, then that person could be a great first recruit.

7. The company should pay for selling products or services and not recruiting more distributors. If this is the case, proceed with caution and at your own risk.

8. Be very leery of requests to make large purchases up front.  Actually, I’d avoid any plan like this.

9. All MLM’s, just like any type of business, require work. Beware of false promises of easy money making schemes. Beware of guarantees such as “everyone is making money with this automatically.”  Products don’t sell themselves and folks won’t camp out on your doorstep begging to become distributors.

10. Do the math for yourself. Have a trusted advisor, friend, accountant or attorney check you and make sure that the payout plan is actually feasible.

11. Avoid products or services with “miracle” claims to them. Actually try the products and services yourself to make sure that you like them and WANT to promote them first and know how they work.

The MLM industry is one that holds great promise. Unfortunately, there are a few undesirable people and companies. By following your due diligence, asking questions and proceeding with caution you should be safe. Check these things out first!

You’ve probably heard it said that Network Marketing is essentially a people’s business. Some have also labelled it a people’s franchise because of the similarities between the business models of network marketing and franchising. Advocates of the industry name it as the ultimate people’s business and say there is nothing quite like it.

Of course people that are in network marketing will immediately respond positively to this whereas those that are not familiar with the industry, or have had some bad experiences might be strongly opposed to this idea. Success or failure in network marketing is not dictated by politics, race, age, background or gender, but always by results. In that respect it is probably also the fairest business model in the world.

For many people however, the true value of their home based business is not directly in the financial return.

The lessons a person can learn while building his or her own network marketing business are truly priceless. Many people are totally transformed through the personal growth they experience as a direct result of their challenges in their MLM businesses. It forced them to get out of their comfort zones, grow, and in many cases become a better person.

So what is so unique about network marketing in this respect?

Doesn’t every entrepreneur have to deal with challenges? The answer of course is: Yes, they do. And they also experience personal growth as a result from this. However there is a significant difference. Most entrepreneurs are self made and many of them learned their trade largely outside of formal education. Either they were taught by a family member, a mentor or perhaps they learned everything the hard way: by trial and error.

Very rarely will you find an entrepreneur that has an extensive library of books and tapes on personal development. Most businesspeople don’t attend seminars and motivational trainings. They think it’s all a bunch of hype. While in some cases this can be true, there are many trainings and seminars that teach the principles of success better than any textbook found in business schools.

One of the great things about network marketing is that this type of education is built into the training systems of all good companies. There is no business on the face of the earth that places such a strong and direct emphasis on the importance of personal development as the network marketing industry. Many companies might argue that they spend a great deal of their budget on education; training employees and as such assisting them in personal development but in most cases what they are actually talking about is personnel development. Although the words are almost identical, their meanings are vastly different.

Network marketing is all about building people.

It is probably the best school on the planet if you want to learn about what it takes to be successful in life and you don’t need rich parents or some kind of scholarship to enroll

Research is always an important component of any business venture and considering a distributorship with a MLM company is no exception.

Searching the Internet under “Multilevel Marketing” returns a recipe of results. These range from government agencies, general information web sites, encyclopedia type sites to a host of disgruntled, former MLM distributors. People who are “pro” MLM don’t write web sites on the topic because they’re usually too busy building their network

THE GOOD SIDE

Here are some of the benefits of finding a reputable MLM company:

- They have an established and very marketable product line or service, and strive to improve or add to the existing line-up.
- Recruiting new distributors will be a streamlined process, and the company will not be involved in Pyramiding.
- As a company, they will have a solid track record and good work ethics.
- No experience will be required. A good MLM company will provide one-on-one training, as well as motivational seminars and a full compliment of training materials. After all, in Multilevel marketing, when one succeeds all succeed.
- A reputable MLM company will be “Family” rated, meaning that crude conduct is not tolerated.
- They will provide an excellent bonus plan with many incentives for those who excel.
- Well-established MLM companies should be able to provide you with resource material to aid you in not only product sales but in recruiting.
- They will have minimal start-up fees.
- A strong support system.
- You will be led by example.
- Healthy team competition.
- There will be a successful business and marketing plan in place that can be successfully duplicated by others, assuming they apply themselves to the plan and are motivated to succeed.
- There exists the possibility of full-time or part-time commitment.

These attributes would definitely belong to an ideal Multilevel Marketing Company, however not all reputable companies excel in all these areas. Some companies will be better in certain areas than others. Do research on the company. Don’t just accept the motivational hype used by most MLM companies in order to recruit.

Some MLM distributors are so highly trained that they have a “come-back” for almost every statement you make or concern you have. This would be considered a ‘high-pressure’ invitation to join. Always take time away to cool off – especially if you’re excited by what you heard. Sit on your decision for a while and do research. If the company is good, they will still be there when you wake up tomorrow; and yes, you will get a follow-up phone call.

THE DOWNSIDE

While the MLM model can be a great tool to achieve what you want in life, it would be remiss not to mention the downside.
- It is easy to get ‘taken’ by a disreputable MLM company. Do your research.
- If you plan on developing a network – a “downline” – it will cost you more money than you realize and take you longer than you think – although this is slight compared to the cost and time required to start up a traditional business. You will spend a lot on resource and training materials that you will end up giving away to prospects and to your downline distributors.
- You might spend a lot of money on fuel for your vehicle, meals out, hotel rooms or neck surgery from sleeping in your car.
- Some companies insist on a minimum monthly order to maintain your distributorship.
- Some companies only pay you for recruiting other distributors and not on their total sales volume. Beware, as this is called ‘Pyramiding’ and is illegal in most countries.
- While you may initially be led to believe that the products sell themselves and that you can make a lot of money with little effort, beware. Most businesses, whether they are traditional, online, or MLM, take a lot of energy and effort to make them successful. Consider a rocket: 60 – 80% of the fuel is used just to raise it a few inches off the ground.
- Be ready for a lot of rejection. Approximately 80%+ of the people you contact will turn you down.
- It is easy to get caught up in the ‘dream’ and overspend because, “Winners always find a way.” It is also easy to be pressured into ‘willingly’ spending beyond your means.
- It could very easily become your life’s vocation, with everything centered on it. Some distributors even refuse to attend family weddings etc., because it falls on the same date as their MLM seminar.
- Also, like most businesses, when you begin you will be spending much more than you make.

The final judgment:

Most business entrepreneurs face the question, “How much am I able and willing to lose if it doesn’t work?” That is the question you have to ask yourself before you get into Multilevel Marketing.

And of course, what do you want from life and what are you willing to do to get it?

If you enjoy helping others succeed so that you can succeed, are willing to take the risks associated with being in business for yourself, even on a part-time basis, and are willing to put in long days, then Multilevel Marketing may just be the tool you are looking for to achieve your business and life goals.

(Part III - Retaining Leaders)

Now you’re ready to concentrate on retaining the leaders in your organization. This is so simple you’ll wonder why attrition is a problem.

There are three key ingredients necessary for keeping the best people in business with you.

The first is something we all do and that is to make sure every new distributor gets a check in their first thirty days of activity. Make sure they are working with your duplicable systems and concentrating on the single daily activity that will earn them the most. Make certain they have all the back-office tools, training and marketing material they need to get started day one. That first check is great to reinforce belief and build their personal story of how great the business is.

The second key is to maintain regular weekly contact. This can be done via phone, fax, email, newsletters, post cards, even a private internet message board or online chat. Your distributors should get something of value from you every week - a training schedule, sponsoring tip, article reprint or newspaper clipping. All of this is addition to the 1-on-2’s, 3-ways, and conference recruiting calls. Remember to send birthday, anniversary and holiday greetings.

The third secret of the professionals is to provide attention, recognition, and public praise.

Honor your Upline mentors and edify your Successline distributors. Use your newsletters, conference calls and company events to congratulate and thank your leaders. Let them know specifically what you appreciate most about their contributions.

Celebrate every achievement. Reward your leaders and let them know they are special.

The interview process is designed to get the candidate to ask to join your opportunity. Even though you are looking for front line leaders, a happy by-product of this process is that you will also sponsor a lot of people deeper in your organization.

Now let’s run through the basic qualifying interview. Use that exact term with your candidates: “Let’s set up an appointment for a qualifying interview”, or, “and you’ll get all your questions answered during the qualifying interview”.

First, we’ll look at the basic structure for the interview, then we’ll go though a typical scenario.

Now we’ll try the process with what many feel is the most difficult candidate - a high-level executive with no formal sales background. We’ll call the candidate, Kim, and the interviewer, You.

What was on your mind when we set up this meeting?

[Your opening statements are designed to give you control of the interview; you have put the candidate at ease with a low-risk out, set the stage for the take away, assured the candidate that their concerns will be addressed and asked the probing question - this is where you listen closely and discover what’s important to the candidate]

Kim: I’ve been in purchasing at Major Corp. for six years and feel like I’m not advancing anymore.

You: Glass ceiling?

Kim: I don’t think so; business has been flat the last few years and there’s no growth or new openings.

You: Well, you’ve done great at Major Corp. It must be an interesting field to be in.

Kim: It was more exciting at first when I got to travel.

You: Oh?

Kim: Oh, yes! (and Kim’s into a 30 minute passionate travelogue)

[Now that you know what’s important to the candidate, begin the Romance by tailoring your presentation to hit the candidate’s hot buttons]

You: …and we just took our Top Executives, people like yourself, on a seven day Caribbean cruise for Leadership Training and R&R…

Kim: And you get paid to do this?!

You: Y’know, Kim, this isn’t for everybody, and I’m sure you have some questions or concerns.

Kim: I’m still not clear on exactly how you make money or what I have to actually do…

You: Let me tell you about Pat, one of the leaders in our organization and what Pat’s been doing to earn a five-figure monthly income…

[At this point you edify Pat, who is in your upline, and Educate Kim about the easily duplicable profit building activities. Let the candidate in on one of the methods of creating prospects on demand]

Kim: …and the commission checks keep coming in forever even if I stop working?

You: Does this sound like something you’d be interested in?

Kim: You said Pat started part time…

You: Kim, not everyone becomes a leader in this business and most people discover their talent for it by beginning part time. And some of the best in the industry never got around to going full-time! Let’s say you qualified to start part- time, could you find about 10 hours a week to build your business?
